Father Sentenced To Community Service In Connection With 3-Year-Old Son's Shooting Death

A father who was found guilty on endangering children and negligent homicide charges earlier this year was sentenced on Monday to 50 hours of community service and told to pay a $500 fine.

A judge also suspended a 24-month prison term for Joshua Heagren, 25.

On May 28, 2012, Heagren's 3-year-old son was playing when he found his father's .45 caliber handgun and shot himself in the head. The young boy, Lucas Heagren, was taken to Akron Children's Hospital, where he died the
next day.

As part of his sentencing, Heagren also will be required to submit to drug and alcohol use monitoring and maintain fulltime employment. He also will be prohibited from possessing firearms.
