Family Speaks After Autopsy Finds Heroin Caused Death Of Pregnant Woman
A Delaware County woman who was found dead on Aug.1 died of heroin intoxication, according to an autopsy released on Monday.
While the findings of the autopsy bring some answers, plenty of questions remain.
Deanna Ballman's body was found in a vehicle near Bevelheimer Road and state Route 605, near Westerville. The 23-year-old was nine months pregnant.
Ballman had just moved back home to Pataskala from Colorado, where she and her estranged husband served in the military.
Her family said that Ballman was trying to make a life for her two children, and preparing for the arrival of her third, a girl she planned to name Mabel.
"She was totally against drugs,” Ballman’s mother, Lori said. “Especially being pregnant, they had to either be injected into her or put in her water."
Lori Ballman said that the autopsy only strengthened her belief that someone killed her daughter. In her words, "she did not do this to herself.”
The autopsy revealed that Ballman had a puncture mark on her left thigh and possibly had heroin in her purse.
She also had morphine and codeine in her blood system at the time of her death and had morphine, monoacetylmorphine, codeine, acetylocodine and diacetylmorphine in her urine.
Ballman also had a 1/4 inch contusion on her left elbow.
Family members filed a police report stating that Ballman disappeared after responding to a Craigslist advertisement. Law enforcement agencies combed a New Albany neighborhood looking for clues.
As 10TV reported in August, the doctor whose home was searched has a history of police runs to his house, some involving women he met on Craigslist. 10TV is not identifying the man because he has not been charged with a crime.
The Delaware County Sheriff's Office continues to investigate this case as a suspicious death.
