Family of Shooting Victim Asks Suspect To Turn Himself In
Toledo Police say Dimitrias Graves is wanted in the shooting death of a Newark mother.
Investigators call him armed and dangerous, and though the shooting happened in Toledo, they believe he may be in the Newark area.
The family of the woman he is accused of killing is asking Graves to turn himself in.
The victim's mother, Marie White, is a survivor.
"I was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010," White said "I had to be strong for my kids. That's the only thing that kept me going."
But now she is facing the challenge of her life; the death of her daughter.
"I've fought to be here for my kids, and then somebody takes my baby away from me."
22-year-old Mariah Wells was visiting Toledo with her boyfriend, Dimitrias Graves.
"I liked him," White said. "I thought he was a pretty nice young man. I just, I don't understand what happened."
Thursday morning, Marie got a heart-stopping knock at the door.
"The detective came to tell me she was gone."
They told her some sort of fight had broken out while her daughter and Graves were visiting his family in Toledo.
"The detective told us he ran in the house and got a gun and just started shooting. And he said she got shot in the back. He said he didn't think that he meant to shoot her," said White.
It's cold comfort to a mother missing her daughter.
"I don't know if she suffered. She had nobody there with her. That's the hard part," said White.
If that's hard, explaining Mariah's death to her 4-year-old son seems impossible.
"She called him her little man. And she loved him to death. He'll know that. She loved him."
Marie says the only thing that will bring her any peace is to see Dimitrias Graves in custody.
"If it was an accident, just turn yourself in," she said. "I want him caught."
Anyone with information on Graves' whereabouts is asked to call police.
