Family, Friends Gather 1 Year After Fire That Killed 3 In Condemned House

A small group of people gathered on Christmas Eve to remember three people killed in a fire in a house that no one should have been in.

Jerrica Francisco, 22, Dayshawn Francisco, 4, and Demetrius Chappell, 33, died on Christmas Eve 2011 when the home they were staying in on Wisconsin Avenue went up in flames.

Investigators determined that the owner of the home should have never allowed the family to be inside the building. A few weeks before the triple-fatal fire, the city had ordered the home uninhabitable.

The home’s owner, Sam Vazirani, rented the home anyways, and as a result, spent 30 days in jail and was ordered to fix and sell the Wisconsin Avenue home and others that he owned that were in similar conditions.

“It’s never going to change,” said Pam Francisco, Jerrica’s mother. “Every time Christmas comes around, I’m going to think about my babies.”

Francisco said that the wounds of losing her daughter and her grandson have not healed in the past year.
“I miss them so much, Francisco said.

On Christmas Eve, several families gathered at the home for a small vigil to remember both of them. Some left messages of love on the side of the home where they died. Others left behind a wreath and a card, vowing the victims would never be forgotten.

“It’s comfort to know that someone is still thinking about my kids,” Francisco said.

Family members said that the former landlord still has not apologized for what happened.
