Extra Police On Hand At Chillicothe Schools Because Of Threat

Police in Chillicothe said they are providing an increased presence around the middle and high school because of an undisclosed threat.

The schools located on Yoctangee Parkway are on alert but not on lockdown, according to school officials.

A news release from Superintendent Jon Saxton stated that the threat was received Wednesday, and it was made against an individual at the middle school.

"It is our belief that we have done what is necessary to ensure student safety at Chillicothe Middle School and Chillicothe High School being that they share the same facility.  The steps we have taken are precautionary measures as we would prefer to be over cautious as opposed to being under cautious," said Saxton.

Chillicothe High School junior David Bonar said he went to school as usual Thursday morning but said the very unusual security measures inside of the building left him feeling nervous and tense.

“I felt really weird, because I had never seen police officers in that part of the school before,” Bonar said. “So I didn’t really know what to think, because I had known there was a threat.”

Bonar said that he sent his mother several text messages telling her he did not feel safe and that he wanted to come home.

The junior’s father said that based on what little information he knew about the threat, he and David’s mother decided to take him out of school.

“I’m a little concerned that we’re getting the lack of information, because if we were more informed, we’d be more at ease and more comfortable with what’s going on,” father Scott Bonar said.

District officials said that police would be present on Friday inside both schools, also.

Scott Bonar said his son would not return to school until next week, when he believes the treat is gone or more specific information is provided.

“There wouldn’t be police, two in each hallway, there wouldn’t be a dog in the office, you know, so something’s going on,” Scott Bonar said. “We would just like some more information about it.”
