Deputies said an inmate has died after escaping from custody and crashing a car along state Route 104 near the Ross County and Pickaway County line.

Authorities say the inmate, David Payne, 27, got away from the Fayette County Memorial Hospital where he was taken for a medical procedure.

He made a break for it while deputies were getting him out of a cruiser.

Washington Court House police said Payne then stole cash, a pair of jeans and a car from a home on Paint Street.

Police chased the inmate in the stolen vehicle. Speeds reached around 100 miles per hour.

The Pickaway County Sheriff's Office said the inmate crashed along state Route 104 around 3:30 p.m. He was ejected from the vehicle and died. No deputies were injured.
