Drunken Wrong-Way Driver Swerves Around Police, Pushes Cars Off Road Along I-270

Police said that they were stunned no one was killed or seriously injured after a drunken driver traveled the wrong way along I-270.

Authorities said that Damien Colbert’s blood alcohol level was twice the legal limit when they pulled him over. Colbert, 25, was so drunk, he had no idea why he was being arrested.

“Am I on the wrong freeway?” Colbert is heard asking an officer.

“No, you’re not on the wrong freeway,” the officer responds. “You’re on the wrong side of the freeway.”

Colbert told police that he had just dropped off several women at a home off state Route 161. He then allegedly drove south along the northbound lanes of I-270 for six miles. An officer saw Colbert driving the wrong way near South Hamilton Road.

When the officer pulled in front of Colbert to stop him, he drove around the cruiser and continued along I-270, causing several cars to swerve.

Colbert ran at least one car off the road and missed slamming head-on into a tractor-trailer. Eventually, Colbert put on his turn signal and pulled off the highway.

Police said that Colbert was unable to provide a valid explanation why he did not stop.

“Why did you keep driving with my lights and sirens behind you for like probably a half of a mile with cars coming straight at you? Can you explain that?” the officer said.

“I’m wrong man, I don’t know,” Colbert told the officer.

Police said that they found an open bottle of vodka inside Colbert’s van.

“We were lucky and the people that passed him going in the opposite direction were extremely lucky,” Gahanna Police Lt. Dan Williams.

Colbert was charged with OVI and fleeing.
