Delaware County is ranked 38th on a list of the healthiest counties for children in the United States.

The ranking was part of U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings, which highlight counties that feature fewer infant deaths, fewer low-birth-weight babies, fewer deaths from injuries, fewer teen births and fewer children in poverty, according to city officials.

Delaware was given an overall score of 83 percent in the rankings.

Delaware County Health Commissioner Sheila Hiddleson said that the county has many child-friendly elements.

“Our kids live in an environment that helps them to be healthy, including access to our tobacco-free parks and recreation areas and to nutritional foods and health care services,” Hiddleson said.
