Delaware Intersections Being Upgraded To Allow Quicker Response To Fires
New technology is expected to help the Delaware Fire Department respond quicker to emergencies.
Fire Chief John Donahue says the department will be upgrading all intersections with traffic signals that include traffic preemption.
The technology will transmit a GPS signal as a fire engine is approaching a light, so the engines no longer have to stop.
"Now, instead of our guys approaching an intersection with a red light, that light will already be green and the intersection will already be cleared out - so it is going to provide a faster response, but more importantly a safer response for our personnel," said Donahue.
Right now, five intersections in the city are equipped with the technology. The chief says the goal is to have all signals upgraded by the end of next year.
