One deer is dead and another escaped after crashing through a building housing the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center administrative operations.

The incident happened at the Ohio State University building, located at 660 Ackerman Road, at about 8:30 a.m.

The two deer crashed through an entryway.

Witnesses said one deer immediately crashed through the second pane of glass to freedom, but the second animal became trapped and disoriented.

Employees say they blocked off the doors and tried to warn people as the wounded animal frantically searched for an escape route.  Employee Kristen Thatcher said workers called security right away.

“We called security right away, and we just kind of closed off the doors so that no one could walk in,” said Kristen Thatcher, a witness to the incident. “We tried to signal people (and say), ‘Eventually, this deer is going to come out, so you know, be careful.’”

Witnesses said the second deer ultimately escaped.

Both animals shot across the green space, narrowly missing two people, before bounding across Ackerman Avenue. One deer was struck and killed by a car, and the other ran off.

No one was injured when the deer entered the building.
