The death of a 90-year-old grandmother who died as a result her injuries sustained during a fight was ruled a homicide Friday by the Franklin County Coroner.

John Spindler was recently hospitalized at Grant Medical Center after reportedly being attacked by fellow inmates at the Franklin County Jail in a case of “jailhouse justice.” He was at the prison after being charged with assault in connection with his grandmother’s injuries.

Annerea McCray died Wednesday at Mount Caramel East Hospital. Her injuries were sustained when she attempted to pull Spindler off his mother when the two were arguing about Spindler not having a job, according to a family member.

Spindler reportedly threw his 85-pound grandmother to the ground, breaking her pelvis in three places as well as her arm.

John Spindler is currently charged with felonious assault and domestic violence.
