People in a west Columbus neighborhood woke up Thursday to find their parked cars smashed by another vehicle.

It happened just off Trabue Road at Mapleway Drive just before 3 a.m.

Police said the driver crashed into at least six parked cars and kept going, eventually stopping in a wooded area. Four of the vehicles were hit in the front of the lot, and then the truck continued on, damaging a Mercedes and a Nissan.

“It's a disaster, and I'm getting married so I definitely didn't need this,” said Dennis Kushnerov, an owner of one of the now-wrecked cars.

“I heard a loud bang and metal crumpling and glass and that's when I shot out of bed and ran outside, because I knew what had happened,” said Bill McCracken.

The truck eventually came to rest in the nearby woods. It was stuck in the mud. The driver revved the engine, trying to get the truck to move.

After that did not work, witnesses say the driver and his female passenger got out of the truck and started running back towards Trabue Road.

One of the apartment residents tackled them to the ground, while another doused the couple with pepper spray.

When officers arrived, they spotted both of the suspects showering themselves with beer. The couple claimed they had poured beer in their eyes to get rid of the sting from the spray.

The driver told police that he could not stop the truck before the crash because the brakes went out.

Police took both the driver and his passenger into custody. They face charges of fleeing the scene and open container.

Residents say it’s not the first time vehicles have crashed into the lot over the last few years.

“I park on this side of the parking lot. Unfortunately, they're fair game on that side of the parking lot,” added McCracken.
