The head of the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau, Richard Cordray, won't say if he won tonight's round on Jeopardy. But he does admit it took him awhile to get back into the game show flow.

"It was very interesting, frankly, to go back and do something that I had done half a lifetime ago," Cordray told 10TV. "They have had other tournaments before but I had never been able to participate because I had typically been a candidate for political office."

Cordray is Ohio's former Attorney General and Treasurer. He was appointed by President Obama last year to head the consumer agency.

"One thing I can say is that uniquely among the players in this tournament because I'm a presidential appointee I was not allowed to accept any money that I would win," said Cordray. "So Alex makes it a point to say that among the players, Richard Cordray is not accepting any money he wins. Just to drive the point home he said 'all the other players will be eagerly accepting whatever they win."

Cordray admits that never everyone on his staff thought it was a good idea to go back on the game show.

"There are people close to me that thought I should not do it because all I could do is puncture the mystique," said Cordray. "But I like to challenge myself and when you get invited to the old-timers game at Cooperstown you say yes and then later you figure out how to give the best account of yourself."

Cordray went undefeated during his five appearances on the show in 1987. He was also a semifinalist in the Jeopardy! Tournament of Champions. In total, he won $45,303 during his six TV appearances.

Now a federal official, Cordray says he tried to practice the best he could prior to the taping.

"It's not just what you know, it's what you can think of in two seconds," said Cordray. "If you can't think of it in two seconds on Jeopardy! it's no better than if you didn't know it at all."

Jeopardy! Battle of the Decades 1980s week airs this week. Cordray will be on tonight's show at 7pm on 10TV.
