Community Mourns Teacher's Death As Police Continue Investigation Into Fatal Hit & Run

A memorial has taken over at the crash site, where a local teacher and coach was struck and killed on Sunday.

But on Thursday, investigators shared some key evidence gathered from the scene where the memorial now sits.

One is the color of the car that struck and killed Robert Lennon.

There also is new information that a second car may have come up behind that vehicle as it left the scene.

"We believe that the vehicle involved in that crash that hit Mr. Lennon was charcoal gray in color, based on some evidence that was collected at the scene,” said Lt. Anne R. Ralston with the Ohio State Highway Patrol

Investigators say the pieces found at the scene came from the bumper of the vehicle that struck Lennon.

“From what we know so far, this piece could be possibly an aftermarket piece. Like somebody had their bumper repaired,” said Sgt. Marcus Pirrone with the Delaware post of the OSP.

Pirrone says the gray pieces that were recovered are now at the Bureau of Criminal Investigations crime lab.

He says when they have completed processing the pieces at BCI, they will go to the FBI lab.

But there was more released on Thursday.

"We believe that there was another car that could have been in very close proximity to this gray vehicle, and it was travelling approximately 300 yards behind the gray vehicle,” Ralston said.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol, Delaware County Sheriff's Office, the Delaware County Prosecutor's Office and the FBI’s Violent Crimes Unit are all working together on the investigation.

The FBI's Violent Crimes Unit will specifically assist with looking at cell phone activity at the time of the accident.

"We'll just be looking for information in the area that we could glean from cell phone data, so perhaps we could find some witnesses or perhaps the suspect,” said Robert Moledor, a task force officer with the Violent Crimes Unit.

The new information came more than an hour after family and friends came together for a mass for Lennon.

Former track members and alumni came out and surrounded the Lennon family Robert Lennon’s casket was led into the school gymnasium.

"Mr. Lennon was one of my father's best friend's, and they have coached together over 40 years,” said Lennon’s friend Lori Moore “He has a very big family, but DeSales was his family."

Investigators say they want to close this case for his extended family.

"What we are looking for is to be able to put these pieces together for Mr. Lennon's family to be able to give them some closure and to be able to tell them exactly what happened,” Ralston said.

Authorities say if you remember driving in the area on the accident on Sunday to contact them.
