Community Mourns Death Of Miami Trace High School Student
A school community was mourning the death of a Miami Trace High School student Monday.
Junior Nick Havens died over the weekend after playing in his school’s football game and staying at a friend’s house.
Nick’s mother, Dawn Havens, said that she always knew that her middle child had wisdom beyond his years.
“We always said he was an old soul in a young kid’s body,” Havens said.
She said that she and her husband received a call this weekend that no parent ever wants to receive.
“They just couldn’t wake him, and it had only been a few hours since somebody had talked to him,” Havens said. “I got the call, and by the time I had gotten to the house, I think he was gone already.”
The loss has been hard on Nick’s friends, too.
“Nick loved life, he loved his peers, he loved his friends, they loved him. They all had a mutual respect for each other,” said Nick’s father, Chris Havens.
The circumstances surrounding Nick’s death were not immediately known. An autopsy was performed, and the Fayette County Coroner’s Office was expected to release the results soon.
“The Miami Trace community is shocked and saddened by the passing of Nick. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family,” Miami Trace principal Rob Enochs said.
A viewing for Nick was scheduled for 4 to 8 p,..m. Tuesday at First Baptist Church, located at 300 E. East St. in Washington Court House.
