Columbus Police Arrest Cold Case Suspect After Nearly 20 Years
Columbus Police arrested a man they believe is the suspect in a rape that happened 18 years ago.
Officers arrested 47-year-old Leroy Davis Friday morning at his home.
Police say he is the suspect in a rape that happened on June 23, 1996.
During that incident, a 34-year-old woman said she was grabbed by the throat, threatened with a box cutter, and sexually assaulted on Bryden Road.
She was later treated at an area hospital, where police collected evidence.
In July 2014, detectives reviewed the case because of the Cold Case Initiative and the evidence was resubmitted to the Ohio Bureau of Investigations for analysis.
A DNA profile was developed and entered into the CODIS database. That's when officers identified Leroy Davis as the suspect.
According to officials, Davis lived just blocks away from where the incident happened.
Davis was charged with Rape and Kidnapping, and is expected to be arraigned on Saturday.
