Police say a man examining a gun early Wednesday morning shot and killed another person because he did not know the weapon was loaded.

John Fisk Jr., 26, was shot around 2:30 a.m. at a residence on Westedge Court.

Fisk and two other men were examining firearms after returning from a bar, according to a police report.

One man allegedly pulled the trigger of an M-1 Garand rifle. He told authorities that he was unaware it was loaded.

Fisk was hit in the upper arm and was pronounced dead at Mt. Carmel West Hospital around 5:30 a.m.

Before he died, Fisk told medical personnel that he believed the shooting was accidental.

Police continue to investigate. The shooter has not been charged, and police have not named that individual.
