Columbus Man Sentenced To 15 Years For ‘Sexploitation’ Of Minor

A Columbus man will spend nearly 16 years in prison for striking up a relationship with a minor online and coercing her into illicit sexual conduct, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office.

Randall V. Roberts was sentenced on Wednesday in connection with contacting a 14-year-old victim on a social networking site in December 2011.

The U.S. Attorney’s Office said that Roberts, 42, pressured her into engaging in sex acts with him.

Officials said that Roberts threatened to expose her if she did not comply with him, after she told Roberts that she wanted to stop their relationship.

According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office, one of the child’s relatives found text messages from Roberts and notified law enforcement officials. Roberts was arrested on May 16.

He pleaded guilty in connection to one count of coercion of a minor in May.

U.S. Attorney’s officials called the case one of “sexploitation.”

“Sexploitation means threatening to expose someone’s sexual activity in order to keep them quite or to keep them engaged in the activity,” said U.S. Attorney Carter Stewart. “It adds fear to the indignity and humiliation a victim is already facing.”
