Columbus Man Presumed Dead After Water Rescue Attempt In North Carolina

Police in North Carolina confirmed on Wednesday that a 21-year-old man from Columbus died after a water rescue attempt.

Kwesi Sample drowned off of the Lockwood Folly Inlet near Holden Beach at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.

Sample's family told 10TV News his body has not been found but authorities presumed him dead.

"It feels like it's a dream. A bad dream, but its reality. We're trying to hold on tight as a family to get through this," his father, Larry Cornish, said.

Sample was in North Carolina with a church group affiliated with the Xenos Christian Fellowship.

It was work that his mother said that he loved.

"He was a teen group leader. There would be high school kids who needed rides to the teen group or rides home. So he made sure that happened," Raynette Cornish told 10TV News.

Water rescue crews searched the water Tuesday and Wednesday in hopes of finding Sample's body, with no success.

"If it doesn't happen, I don't know how much closure we'll truly have," his mother said.
