Columbus High School To Hold Fundraisers To Help Pay For Funeral Of 16-Year-Old Who Died In Fire
Columbus Alternative High School is trying to help the family of a young girl and mother who died in a fire last week.
According to Columbus City Schools, the school will hold a series of fundraisers to raise money for the family of Acairia Watkins to hold her funeral.
School officials said that Watkins was an active member of the orchestra, and on Thursday, the school said it would donate all proceeds from ticket and concession sales to the family. Students also are holding a loose-change drive.
Funeral arrangements are planned for April 22.
Watkins and Daneisha Wilson, 28, were two of four people trapped inside a burning east Columbus apartment early Friday morning. The fire started shortly before 5 a.m. at 1272 East Long St.
Witnesses said that Watkins saved her newborn baby from the fire.
Investigators believed the fire started accidentally in the kitchen on the first floor due to cooking.
