Columbus Crew Remembers Kirk Urso

Sunday's rain did not dampen the spirits at Crew Stadium.

Fans poured out to honor player Kirk Urso, who died tragically from a congenital heart defect two months ago.

The crowd chanted Kirk's name and gathered at Founder's Park on the south end of Crew Stadium to dedicate a plaque on a boulder and an oak tree in his memory.

His brother spoke about Kirk's love for soccer and his excitement of realizing his dream to play professional soccer here in Columbus.

"It is a blessing to know that his memory, his character, his passion for the game and for life will live on here in Columbus," Kyle Urso said.

The university of North Carolina star made five starts in his rookie year as a midfielder with the Crew. Urso was 22 years old when he passed away suddenly Aug. 5.

Crew officials said a player-voted 'Kirk Urso Heart Award' will be started this season in his honor. A memorial fund has also been established in his name to help kids suffering from congenital heart defects.
