Colo, the first gorilla born in human care and the oldest living gorilla at the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, turned 57 years old Sunday.

Colo got to open presents and eat her own birthday cake, made of peanut butter, applesauce, shredded carrots and honey with greek yogurt frosting. It was also garnished with her favorite treats, including tomatoes, star fruit and macadamia nuts.

Colo has lived at the Columbus Zoo since her birth in 1956. Her name came from a national "Name the Baby Gorilla" contest. The name Colo, which is short for Columbus, was chosen from more than 7,500 entries.

Colo gave birth to three children in the 1960's and 1970's. She now has 16 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren and three great-great grandchildren living at the Columbus Zoo and other zoos across the country.
