Carla Hale, Daughter Thank Supporters For Reinstatement Effort

A former Bishop Watterson High School physical education teacher and her daughter attended a meeting of supporters on Saturday to thank them for efforts to get her rehired.

Carla Hale was fired by the Roman Catholic school after her same-sex partner was named in her mother's obituary.

Dozens of Bishop Watterson students, parents and alumni met at the Unitarian Universalist Church in Clintonville on Saturday to discuss strategies to have Hale reinstated.

Mike Liggett has helped organize the effort. He said what the Catholic Diocese of Columbus has decided contradicts Church teachings.

"Even in their catechism, they say we have to be accepting and tolerant of all people. And this action is the complete opposite of that," Liggett said.

Hale's daughter, Courtney, said she and her mother appreciate all of the support. She explained what teaching meant to her mother.

"It means everything. She was so amazing at her job. She cared about every student. She was so close to all the teachers there. She looked forward to every day. She wanted to get there, and she loved impacting those students' lives," Hale said.

Supporters said as of Saturday, they had collected more than 60,000 signatures online in support of having Hale rehired.
