Budget Issues Could Bring Increased Rental Costs At Metro Parks
Metro Parks budget problems could mean increased costs for users as officials work to cut millions from the 2013 budget.
The Metro Parks Board of Commissioners voted to slash more than $6 million from its budget. The cuts mean it will take more time to expand and develop three new parks.
Metro Parks officials blamed state budget cuts partially for the need to reduce. State funding for the parks was expected to drop by almost 50 percent since 2011.
Officials said that layoffs were not planned and that they would focus on maintaining parks so that users cannot tell the difference.
Metro Parks said that it would take longer to keep a promise to voters who passed a levy in 2009 to develop three new parks.
“It is frustrating,” Metro Parks’ John O’Meara said. “We hoped to have some new parks open by now and it just can’t be done. We have to be patient. We are still making some progress, but not nearly the progress we hoped to.”
The budget cuts mean park users could have to pay higher fees to rent shelter houses or play golf.
