Bot Day Set For July 3; Fireworks Planned For Downtown Columbus
WBNS-10TV celebrates its fourth anniversary of using social media on July 3.
"Bot Day" is scheduled that day, a celebration of 10TV's social media fans and followers.
The station ventured into social media in 2008 and was one of the first television stations in the U.S. to use Facebook and Twitter to interact with users.
The 10TV Twitter account is one of a handful of local TV stations in the U.S. to have a verified account. It has more than 27,000 followers.
On Facebook, the WBNS-10TV page has more than 77,000 "likes." The news department often breaks stories that appear on Facebook, often appearing there before you see them on TV.
"Bot Day" is named after the 10TV Bot, named for the nickname users gave the account soon after it launched.
Initially, @10TV started sending out the Web site's RSS headlines on Twitter, but it clearly wasn't enough for the savvy Columbus social media scene.
"We started getting replies on Twitter from people who said that they did not just want to read our headlines," the Bot said. "So I decided to reply. Some Twitter users were rude about it. They started asking me questions about my favorite color, favorite movie and ice cream flavor and I replied. They were floored!"
The @10TV account quickly turned into a bot -- with a personality.
It quickly became an Internet sensation. The Twitter community embraced the Bot and started "following" in droves. A Facebook fan page just for the Bot later cropped up.
July 3 also happens to be the birthday of the Tiny Blue Logo, a profile page set up by 10TV. The logo also solicits news tips from 10TV viewers and Facebook users while sharing occasional glimpses behind the scenes at Central Ohio's News Leader. Demand for the Tiny Blue Logo was high. The TBL, as we call it, quickly reached Facebook's maximum of 5,000 fans. A second Logo page was later created because of viewer demand.
Both 10TV's Twitter and Facebook accounts solicit news tips and breaking news from users. The station receives dozens of great tips each day.
10TV News anchors consistently update their Facebook and Twitter statuses throughout the day -- from reporters out in the field to the anchors interacting with viewers during newscasts.
Several events are planned to celebrate the Bot's birthday. The snarky Bot has been promoting the City of Columbus having its fireworks on July 3 to coincide with the Bot's first birthday.
Thank you to everyone who has helped make WBNS-10TV one of the cutting-edge television stations anywhere that interacts and listens to its viewers.
