Athens Officials Discuss Urban Chickens

Athens is the latest Ohio community to consider allowing chickens inside city limits.

A group of advocates called "CACKLE" are asking council to alter city code to allow four hens per yard.

The city administrator said council members recognize the benefits of residents raising their own food, but they also have some concerns about safety and regulation.

There was no timetable for a decision to be made.

More urban areas have been considering allowing chickens inside city limits in recent years, including Bexley, which changed its rules in 2010.
