Athens County Sheriff's K9 injured in line of duty

The Athens County Sheriff’s drug K9 Bora was injured in the line of duty early Monday morning.

Bora was called in to assist Ohio State Highway Patrol with a traffic accident near Dow Lake Damn on U.S. 50, when she suffered an injury after jumping into a vehicle during a free-air sniff.

Deputy Joel Banks responded to the scene with Bora at 12:30 a.m. During the investigation Bora immediately jumped into the suspect’s vehicle and indicated a positive response to the presence of narcotics.

After the response, Bora would not put any weight on her back leg and Banks carried her to his cruiser.

Banks noticed what appeared to be a snake bite on Bora’s leg and transported her to the county line and Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center treated Bora for her injuries.

Sheriff Rodney Smith said in a statement: “Dr. Patrick Satchell, from Ohio State University Veterinary Medical Center, advised my office this morning that Bora is doing quite well and her condition is stable. Dr. Satchell believes that Bora was in fact bitten by a snake and that Bora needs to be monitored closely for the next 48 hours.”
