Athens County Deputy Injured When Fallen Telephone Line Strikes Him, Forces Him Into Highway
An Athens County deputy was injured on Friday after a telephone line fell on U.S. Route 33.
According to the sheriff, a pole was struck by a trash truck heading westbound at Circle Hill.
The cable snapped at the top of the pole, and a 4-foot section of the pole and the cable was stretched across U.S. 33.
Lt. John Morris and Reserve Deputy Matt May arrived at the scene to stop traffic, and as May was walking on the eastbound side of
the highway, a semi ran over the cable and pole, which hooked onto the semi.
The semi dragged the pole, and May was hit by the cable in the neck, flipping him onto the highway.
May was hospitalized for injuries to his neck and face. He was expected to be OK.
The Plains Fire Department responded and removed the cable and wire.
