Arson Blamed For Fire At "Dixie" Composer's House In Mount Vernon
Investigators are blaming arson for two fires in an east-central Ohio city including one that destroyed part of the historical home of Dan Emmett, known as the composer of the song "Dixie."
Mount Vernon Fire Chief Chad Christopher says the fire at the Dan Emmett House was fully involved when firefighters arrived around 4 a.m. Monday.
The Mount Vernon News reports city police, firefighters and the State Fire Marshal's Office are investigating.
Emmett wrote "Dixie" in 1859 and at the outbreak of the Civil War the song was popular in both the South and the North.
