Columbus SWAT officers Friday morning arrested a man accused of kidnapping and raping a 12-year-old girl.

According to CPD detectives, the girl was walking through a parking lot near a market at Westerville and Morse Roads around 11:00 p.m. on Friday, April 5.

Officers said Vent Hairston, 54, forced the child into his car and drove her to and apartment on the 3200 block of Thornway Dr. in northeast Columbus. That's where police say the girl was sexually assaulted.

Detectives said that Hairston eventually let the child go, and she ran back to the market to call her mother.

The girl later identified the home where she says the alleged attack occurred. Investigators said DNA evidence was recovered that matched Hairston, which led to his arrest.

"She did a great job of being able to bring us back here, and he was a person of interest. It was just a matter of getting the evidence that we needed so that we could arrest him,” said Sgt. Jeff Skinner, Columbus Police Department.

Officers removed two laptops, a desktop computer and bags of other evidence from Hairston’s apartment.

Hairston is charged with rape and kidnapping and is scheduled to be arraigned on Saturday.
