WBNS-10TV on Thursday became the first Columbus television station to offer an Android app.

Users may download the free app by going to the Android "Market" and searching for the app by typing in "10TV."  Then, they can conveniently follow 10TV for news updates and local information for central Ohio.  The app includes the following content:

  • Local central Ohio news and statewide headlines
  • Weather updates, including current conditions, local animated radar, national radar, 5-day forecast and hourly forecast
  • Severe weather resources including central Ohio power company information, links to central Ohio hospitals, where to find generators, as well as toll-free numbers for insurance company claims
  • Local sports scores and OSU football updates
  • Traffic updates, which include live pictures from traffic cameras all over the city, closings and delays, movie times, flight information, lottery numbers and much more

The success of the station's mobile Web site, 10TVToGo, inspired the addition of the 10TV iPhone and Android apps. 10TVToGo traffic has continued to increase since its launch in 2006.  In fact usage hit an all-time high when remnants of Hurricane Ike hit central Ohio in September 2008.

"As Central Ohio's News Leader, we fully understand the demands of an ever-increasing mobile audience," said Tom Griesdorn, WBNS-10TV president and general manager.  "Based on the number of people who rely on 10TVToGo each day for mobile news, it was only natural to extend our mobile reach and provide Droid users with an application that enables them to utilize 10TV as a one-stop-shop for all their information needs."

Back in December, 10TV became the first Columbus television station to offer an iPhone app, allowing users to download it on iTunes an then following's news headlines, along with real-time traffic and weather information.

Users who do not have iPhones or Androids can continue to access 10TVToGo information on their wireless devices.  Fans of 10TV can also follow their favorite local station on Twitter and Facebook
