Alert Issued After Newark High School Student Sexually Assaulted While Walking To School
Newark City Schools alerted parents and students after a student said she was assaulted on her way to school.
The Newark High School student told police she was walking near Granville and Hull streets around 8 a.m. Tuesday when she was threatened and sexually assaulted by a man.
School officials said that police were immediately notified and the school alerted parents with a mass phone call.
Classmate Crystal Thompson said that she planned to make changes to her walk to school after hearing the news.
“I normally have two headphones in my ear,” Thompson said. “I’ll probably just put one in this time and be a little bit more cautious than I normally am.”
The school district warned students not to talk to strangers and to walk to school in groups.
“Some of the students might be a little shaken up,” Thompson said.
No arrests were immediately made in connection with the assault. Police said that they did not think the person responsible for the crime was a student.
