20-Year-Old Mother Accused Of Leaving Baby In Car To Go Drink
A Worthington woman is facing charges that she left a three-month-old child in a car while she went drinking.
Savannah Butler, 20, appeared in courtroom on Monday.
Police say over the weekend that Butler left her baby son in a car while she got drunk outside of a vacant apartment building on Dunbrooke Court in West Columbus.
The mother of three is being charged with obstructing official business and child endangering.
Butler's mother told 10TV that the charges are out of character for her daughter.
"She cloaks to that baby like a blanket. She is not a bad mother," said Bobbi Jo Fields.
Fields says her daughter told her she was sitting in a car parked right next to the baby, and she says her daughter claims the infant was not alone.
"The father was in the car with the baby. He saw the police officers coming, and he has a warrant for his arrest - so he left," said Fields.
Police also charged Butler with resisting arrest, saying she refused to let go of the child when officers tried to handcuff her.
Butler's mother says she suspects the incident was blown out of proportion.
A judge set Butler's bond at $2,500.
