Authorities say two firefighters battling a blaze at an apartment complex near downtown Toledo have been killed.

Lucas County deputy coroner Dr. Maneesha Pandey tells the Toledo Blade that two firefighter fatalities were reported to the office Sunday evening.

The fire department was expected to hold a news conference Sunday night to release more details on the fatal blaze.

A battalion chief on the scene of the fire around 3:30 p.m. in a six-unit apartment building on Magnolia Street near the Huron Market tells WTOL-TV that the firefighters were attacking the blaze when they became disoriented.

The firefighters were taken to Mercy St .Vincent Medical Center, and a large crowd of Toledo Fire Department personnel gathered.
