2 dead, 5 injured after crash on I-71 in southern Franklin County

Deputies are investigating a fatal crash near the Madison and Franklin county line Sunday morning, according to Franklin County Sheriff dispatchers.

Authorities say two vehicles were involved in the crash that happened on I-71 north near State Route 62.

According to officials, a semi-truck traveling northbound 71 struck a Ford Expedition that was also heading northbound.

Authorities say the vehicles collided as the SUV was attempting to enter the roadway from the berm.

The semi-truck went off the roadway and overturned the passengers were ejected from the truck cab, according to Franklin County Sheriff Office.

Officials say the two passengers in the semi-truck, 41-year-old James C. Ross and 22-year-old Skyler Davis was pronounced dead at the scene.

The driver of the SUV 25-year-old Ernesto Mata and his four family members passengers reported injury and expected to survive the crash.

It is unknown who was operating the semi-truck and if the passengers were wearing seats at the time of the crash.

Deputies say the crash remains under investigation and neither drugs or alcohol are suspected as a factor in the crash.

Deputies closed I-71 northbound or several hours while they investigated the crash.
