2 Charged After Meth Lab Discovery In Chillicothe
Authorities shut down Western Avenue, between Main and Water streets, Wednesday after discovering a meth lab.
The lab was discovered inside a home, located at 52 Western Ave. in Chillicothe, after a search warrant was executed around 9:45 a.m., according to Chillicothe police.
Authorities said that they arrived to the home to find an active cook, prompting them to shut the road down. The road reopened at about 3 p.m.
Hope McKenzie, 25, and Charles Bundy, 27, were arrested at the scene on unrelated warrants.
The two were charged with illegal manufacturing of meth, possession of chemicals to manufacture and possession of meth later on Wednesday.
Neighbor Scott Bonar said that he has gotten used to seeing people coming and going from the house across the street from his.
“I thought someone was crashing through my front door, and I was like, ‘Goodness, what’s going on,’” Bonar said. “So we got up, and we saw the SWAT officer behind this tree back here.”
Bonar said it was frightening to think that an active meth lab was near his home.
“It’s pretty scary to know that it was an active lab, and you know, being only hundreds of feet or yards across the street from it,” he said.
Chillicothe police said that they conducted the raid based on a tip from a confidential informant.
Upon executing a warrant, officials said that were met with the strong smell of chemicals from several “one-pot” meth labs in the basement of the home.
“It’s very dangerous,” said Police Chief Roger Moore. “You don’t know if they’re one pots or if there’s a full-blown meth lab, and just the chemicals off of that is an explosion hazard. Let along the respiratory problems with the chemicals in the air.”
Police said that the chemicals were quickly neutralized.
Bonar said that he feels must safer.
“I feel completely safe today, knowing that I have teenage boys that live here, and the two little kids that live on either side of us. I feel much safer,” Bonar said.
