12-Year-Old Recovering After Being Struck By Bullet In East Columbus
A 12-year-old Columbus girl is recovering from a gunshot wound after her family says she was shot Monday night.
It happened along Hallidon Avenue just off Leonard Avenue on the near east side of Columbus.
The girl's family says she was inside her home when she was shot in the chest.
Neighbors who ran to help Jayme West say the bullet struck the girl in the chest and shrapnel went clean through to her back.
Oogie – a woman who asked 10TV to use her nickname – says she heard trouble brewing on Hallidon Avenue. “I just told my kids get in the house, get in the basement. After that, pow, pow, pow, pow, pow.”
The rapid blasts of gunshots were immediately followed by a frantic call to 911.
Dispatcher: Ma'am, I need to know who got shot?
Caller: Her daughter. We're waiting for you all now. She's about 12-years-old. She was in the window.
Dispatcher: 12-year-old got shot? Where is she?
Caller: She's right here on the ground.
Investigators say 12-year old Jayme was shot as she was getting out of the shower. A neighbor with medical training tried to keep the girl awake until medics got there.
"I just (saw) her eyes roll back I was like, ‘don't die on us!’” explains neighbor Tammy Rickett.
It's not the first time an innocent child got caught in the line of fire on Hallidon Avenue. In June of 2003, Kyanashae Mielke was lying on a couch when she was killed by a bullet from a drive by shooting.
Neighbors say it could have been any one of their kids. "It hits home when you know someone. Especially being 12. She wasn't doing anything,”
Police are talking to witnesses in hopes of identifying the gunman who is still on the loose.
Investigators say doctors have stabilized the girl and she is recovering here at Nationwide Children's hospital. Police haven't made any arrests in the case.
