Thieves nearly ruined on central Ohio family’s Christmas, but thanks to 10TV viewers and the Salvation Army, they will have happy holidays.

Jacqueline Manter’s Christmas tree was left bare after thieves broke into her north Columbus apartment this past weekend and stole everything under it – including the gifts for her 1- and 4-year-old grandchildren. The children were supposed to have spent the night at her home to celebrate the holiday.

“I had to call and cancel that because, I don’t have anything to give my grandkids or my children,” Manter said.

The crime left her empty handed and empty hearted.

“I’m devastated; it’s sickening,” Manter said. “I just don’t understand why people do this.”

As soon as Manter’s story aired on 10TV News at 11 on Sunday evening, the phone in 10TV’s newsroom started ringing. Viewers wanted to help Manter and her family.

On Christmas Eve, with the help of the Salvation Army, they did.

“We have a granddaughter of our own, and we immediately set in motion a plan to help restore Christmas for Jacqueline and her family,” said a man who did not want to be identified.

Generous viewers dropped off food, toys and checks for Manter’s family at a north Columbus Salvation Army drop-off location.

‘I’m hoping this makes up for everything she lost,” Suzie Backowski said.

Lenny, who currently is unemployed, said that he and his wife, Kathy, wanted to donate because they feel blessed, despite their own troubles.

“Just to let her know and everyone else know there is still humanity out there,” said Lenny of Newark.

Lt. Kyle Maynor of the Salvation Army delivered the donations to Manter on Monday afternoon.

Manter said that on Sunday night, she doubted whether there were still good people in the world. She said that she felt overwhelmed by central Ohio’s kindness on Monday.

“I was ready to take all the Christmas stuff down,” Manter said. “I was ready to be done with it. I couldn’t wait for the day to be over, but oh my God, after today, I totally have faith. It is amazing.”
