One person was found dead in an Hilliard apartment building that was on fire Saturday morning.

The blaze forced residents from their apartments around 7 a.m.

The fire occurred at 3883 Linda Road in Hilliard, according to the Norwich Fire Department.

The fire gutted one unit, and the five other units in the building were also damaged.

Officials said that one person was found dead inside. Authorities were still working to identify the victim.

“I just kept hearing this ‘thump, thump, thump’ and I was just kind of in that twilight when you're just waking up and opened the window and just huge fiery inferno billowing out of the, what would have been their main picture look-out window,” said neighbor Nathan Thompson.

Hilliard police told 10TV that much of the building was vacant. A family of a mother and two kids did get out safely.

The Red Cross was notified to help an unknown number of residents who were displaced from the fire.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
