Columbus police were searching for answers about a deadly shooting early Monday.

According to dispatchers, one person was shot and killed at a home in the 800 Block of Lilley Avenue. Police say a woman called 911 around 12:15 a.m. saying her boyfriend had been shot.

Officers found 36-year-old Levar Strickland unresponsive. He later died of his injuries.

Family members said Strickland came to Columbus hoping to get away from a troubled life.

"His uncle brought him here to get away from the drama and all the stuff that was going on in Detroit, so he could change his life," said Strickland's cousin, Ebony Cleveland.

Police said that just after midnight, an argument broke out between Strickland and his girlfriend.

According to the girlfriend, a third person came out of nowhere to break up the fight. That person then shot and killed Strickland. The woman said she did not know the man.

Police said that they are searching for that man, who fired multiple shots inside and outside of the home. Investigators had to use a metal detector to find the bullets.

Homicide detectives said they are hoping security cameras from businesses in the area caught video of the crime.

A suspect wearing all black was seen leaving the area on foot.

"It's shocking, and I don't understand it, and this is going to be more coming out to this story. There's more to the story," Cleveland said.
